Mason Greenwood: A Chance at International Redemption with Jamaica

Mason Greenwood might switch international allegiance from England to Jamaica. The Getafe-forward’s potential move comes three years after his sole England appearance.

The Past with England

Three years have passed since Mason Greenwood’s only cap for England’s national football team.

Greenwood, now on loan to Getafe from Manchester United, played for England’s senior side in the Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020.

However, he faced a setback when he and Phil Foden were removed from Gareth Southgate’s squad due to a breach of Covid quarantine guidelines.

Following an internal investigation by Manchester United, the club decided to let Greenwood go in August.

Although many English clubs had their eyes on the forward, he eventually made a late transfer deadline day switch to the Spanish club, Getafe.

With his future for England looking bleak, another door is opening for Greenwood’s international career.

A New Opportunity with Jamaica

Jamaica has expressed its interest in Greenwood representing their national team.

FIFA rules allow Greenwood to switch allegiance to Jamaica due to his Jamaican descent.

However, this switch requires the Jamaican Football Association to appeal formally to FIFA.

When asked about Greenwood’s potential inclusion, Jamaica’s team boss, Heimir Hallgrimsson, commented, “If he gets his former fitness and levels, he would surely be an asset to Jamaica.”

England’s coach, Gareth Southgate, expressed his views on Greenwood’s potential return, mentioning that Greenwood’s case was complicated and that any statements could be taken out of context.

Notably, the senior Jamaica squad currently boasts 13 England-based players, such as forwards Leon Bailey and Michail Antonio from Aston Villa and West Ham, respectively.

Getafe’s Take on Greenwood

Despite the controversies, Getafe’s sporting director, Ruben Reyes, emphasized that signing Greenwood was no different than signing any other player.

He said, “We sign available players. There is no need to handle anything off the pitch.”

He further highlighted that Greenwood would remain with Getafe for the season and expressed excitement about having him onboard.
